We believe fiercely in the potential of young people, and we’re working hard to help them have a real impact on the things that matter to them.
Here in Australia, that means campaigning on the issue of extreme poverty, to raise public awareness of it and to advocate for policy change from our leaders. You might have seen us campaigning in your city. By joining Live Below the Line, you’re adding your voice to our biggest campaign.
The Power of Education
At Oaktree, we believe education transforms lives. We reckon it’s the most powerful tool we have to tackle the injustice of poverty. When a young person is educated, they’re not just learning grammar and maths. They’re amplifying their voice, so they can have a say in their future. For a young person, education is a game-changer. That’s why we partner with organisations that create change on an individual, community and systemic scale, to provide educational opportunities for more young people to break out of the poverty cycle.
The Right Thing To Do
We think having access to education isn’t just a good thing - it’s the right thing. We believe that education is a fundamental human right, which makes access to it an issue of justice, not an issue of charity.
At Oaktree, we don’t do charity. Charity is a favour; charity is top-down. That’s not our style. We know we’re pretty bloody lucky to have such easy access to education in Australia, and we know our neighbours in Cambodia and Timor-Leste have the same right to it as we do. That’s why we work with our international partners, who enable young people to see that right become a reality.
